A 24-year-old man has died and his brother seriously injured after a road accident in Ayrshire.

The man, who has not been named, was a front passenger in a BMW which collided with a vehicle towing a horse trailer on the A71 near Darvel on Friday.

He was taken by air ambulance to Glasgow Southern General Hospital but died later of his injuries.

His 26-year-old brother, who was driving the BMW, was being treated in hospital for life-threatening injuries.

The 30-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock, for treatment. Hospital staff described his condition as stable.

Strathclyde Police said a report on the accident would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
