Two men have been jailed after they were caught on CCTV and posted on YouTube stealing a £7,000 cherry picker from a work site in Fife.

William Allison, 44, and Ian Dolan, 41, both from Airdrie, were sentenced at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Monday to 12 months and 11 months respectively.

The pair were seen in the footage stealing the machine on 7 May 2010 from a site in Main Street, Newmills.

The pair had pled not guilty to theft and were jailed after a trial.

They were caught after a member of the public contacted Crimestoppers after seeing the footage on YouTube.

Det Sgt Jimmy Adamson, of Fife Constabulary, said: "I would like to thank the public for their assistance in this inquiry which led to the arrest of these two men.

"The widespread use of social media has become an important tool for the modern day police officer and the results shown in this case are clear evidence of this."
