Malcolm Webster murder case: Brother allowed to erect new memorial on 27 May
Published: 11th May 2012 12:41:02
The brother of a woman murdered by her husband is being allowed to erect a new memorial for her this month, the BBC Scotland news website can reveal.
Malcolm Webster, of Surrey, was jailed for a minimum of 30 years for murdering Claire Morris in Aberdeenshire in 1994.
Her headstone in Tarves, which still had her married name and referred to a "dear wife", was later removed.
Peter Morris said he was delighted Aberdeenshire Council was allowing him to erect a new memorial on 27 May.
He said: "I am very pleased."
A spokesman for Aberdeenshire Council said: "We can confirm that permission has been given to the Morris family for an appropriate memorial plaque at Tarves Cemetery."
Webster was convicted of murdering Ms Morris, 32, who was originally from Kent, in a faked car crash before staging a similar attempt in New Zealand on a second bride.
Trial judge Lord Bannatyne told him that the murder of Ms Morris was "cold-blooded, brutal and callous".
He set fire to the vehicle with his unconscious wife inside it before later receiving an insurance pay-out.
Webster denied the offences and stood trial at the High Court in Glasgow last year, but has launched an appeal against conviction and challenged the 30-year term as excessive.
