Hibs and Hearts fans head for all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup Final
Published: 19th May 2012 00:23:31
Tens of thousands of Hibs and Hearts fans are heading to Hampden for the first Scottish Cup Final between the Edinburgh sides in 116 years.
Road and rail routes between the Scottish capital and Glasgow are expected to be busy as supporters arrive for the 15:00 kick-off.
Hibs have not lifted the cup since 1902, while Hearts beat Gretna on penalties in the 2006 final.
The winning team will parade the trophy through the capital on Sunday.
ScotRail is providing 11,000 extra trains seats and fans are being warned to stay sober and well behaved.
It's lighter than you might expect. And much smaller than a modern football”
Hearts won the 1896 meeting between the sides and Hibs wait for a trophy has been the subject of taunts from their city rivals, but Hibs captain James McPake insisted the focus was on the game.
He said: "It's something that spurs us on, but on the day we will not be thinking about that 110 years, we'll just be thinking about that 90 minutes, or 90 minutes plus extra time."
Hearts captain Marius Zaliukas described the contest as "the biggest game in the club's history".
"Everyone is thinking what it's going to be like if we win or if we lose, but everyone is very confident and we're going to go to win," he said. "Everyone is going to be involved in history."
Meanwhile football fans looking for an alternative bit of history are being given the chance to handle what is believed to be the world's oldest football at the Smith Museum in Stirling.
All the action from the all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup Final at Hampden will be live on BBC One Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Sport Scotland online, with kick-off at 15:00 on Saturday.
