Two conmen have tricked an 80-year-old woman out of a four figure sum of cash in Stirlingshire.

Central Scotland Police said the pair approached the pensioner at her home in Cornton last Tuesday and offered to carry out work on the house.

They then claimed they had done the work and said they needed to be paid, before taking the woman to her bank to make a withdrawal.

A police spokeswoman described it as a "despicable act".

She said: "Our advice remains that you should always seek quotes from reputable firms when having work carried out.

"Do not always accept work offered from those who turn up at your door. If you ever feel intimidated ask for a friend, relative or neighbour to be with you when they are there."

One of the conmen was described as being about 45 years old, 5ft 10in tall, of average build, with greying short brown hair and a local accent. He was wearing a dark blue jumper and muddy white trainers.

The second man was aged between 25 and 30, was 5ft 8in tall, of average build with light brown hair and a west of Scotland accent. He was wearing a light coloured jumper, dark trousers and a woolly hat.
