A number of houses have been evacuated following a fire at a derelict school in the east end of Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to the former St Mark's Primary School, in Muiryfauld Drive, near Tollcross Park, at about 14:15 on Tuesday.

Some residents nearby were told to leave their homes as a precaution while others were asked to stay inside and close windows.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the blaze had been contained.

Crews remain at the scene and a spokesman for the fire service said operations would continue for "some time"

Roads near the school were closed, with diversions in place.

More than 30 firefighters battled the flames and thick black smoke. Crews who entered the derelict primary were forced to withdraw due to the intensity of the fire.

The badly damaged building partially collapsed, and firefighters continued to tackle the blaze externally, the spokesman said.

A full investigation into the cause will be carried out.
